Rank tracking is not ASO. It’s the first 10% of it.
Why “see your rank” tools fail Shopify app teams, and what to track instead.
Most ASO tools focus on rank tracking: a keyword’s rank in a list. But rank alone doesn’t tell you what to do tomorrow. A keyword you rank #2 on may be a low-volume vanity term. A keyword you rank #41 on may be where 60% of category installs live. The number is the same shape; the decisions are opposite.
The three signals you actually need
Every keyword has three properties that, together, tell you whether it’s worth your week:
- Volume tier, how much install pressure flows through it.
- Current rank, where you sit today against the realistic ceiling.
- Trend, whether the keyword is climbing for you, or for someone else.
Without all three, you’re guessing. With all three, you get a verdict.
What we built instead
KES Score blends those three signals per keyword and gives you a single 0–100 number per row. Sort the leaderboard by KES and work the top rows first.
“Rank changes are events. KES is a verdict.”
The point isn’t that KES is magic. The point is that the metric you sort by should match your goal — installs — not a vanity rank.
